Sixteen-year-old Sophie Bloom wishes she’d been taught the following:
a) Bad boy’s presence (TrOuBlE) + teen girl’s brain (DraMa) = TrAuMa (Highly unstable and very volatile.)
b) The Genus Greekulum Godissimus is notable for three traits: 1) awesome abilities, 2) grudges, and 3) hook-ups, break-ups, and in-fighting that puts cable to shame.
Prior to the Halloween dance, Sophie figures her worst problems involve adolescent theatrics, bitchy teen yoga girls, and being on probation at her boarding school for mouthy behaviour. Then she meets bad boy Kai and gets the kiss that rocks her world.
This breath stealing lip lock reawakens Sophie’s true identity: Persephone, Goddess of Spring. She’s key to saving humanity in the war between the Underworld and Olympus, target numero uno of Hades and Zeus, and totally screwed.
Plus there’s also the little issue that Sophie’s last memory as Persephone was just before someone tried to murder her.
Big picture: master her powers, get her memories back, defeat Persephone’s would be assassin, and save the world. Also, sneak into the Underworld to retrieve stolen property, battle the minions of Hades and Zeus, outwit psycho nymphs, slay a dragon, rescue a classmate, keep from getting her butt expelled from the one place designed to keep her safe …
… and stop kissing Kai, Prince of the Underworld.
This was a pretty funny and entertaining twist on the story of goddess Persephone. It’s been a while since I’ve read mythology, but this was a good reminder that I do really enjoy this kind of stuff (it definitely helps to have a little background in mythology since we get see a lot of the gods and goddess).
The book reads sort of like a teen flick. Sophie, our heroine, narrates the book, and it sort of reminds of the movie Mean Girls (in a good way). Sophie is actually pretty awesome, considering that big bombshell that lands on her. She’s sassy and sarcastic but can be kind of whiny and very much a 16-year-old teenage girl, but I guess I just need to remember is 16-year-old girl with a bit of a flair for the dramatic. Her two best friends are pretty awesome. Theo is actually Prometheus, but is now a also a teenage boy and Hannah is Sophie’s awesome hot friend who’s also a science geek. Oh and let’s not forget about Kai.
“Then I met a boy. I know that’s the worst cliche ever. But sadly, it’s true. And of course. me being me, he couldn’t be just any bad boy. No. He had to be Kai, son of Hades, Lord of the Underword. Anyways, he was really hot and there was this bone-melting kiss… whatever.”
Yeah. I like Kai. Even if he’s kinda a jerk sometimes. He’s just confused by his feelings! haha
The storyline with this book is Sophie realizing that she’s a goddess and having to come to terms with that. To boot, there’s an (attempted) murder to solve while both Zeus and Hades are also after her. There’s even more fun adventures at the school too, a new student counselor who’s not quite what she seems, a mean queen bee and of course a little teen romance angst with Kai.
All and all, it was a pretty fun book. I could have done without so much teen drama but the fun twist and turns more than made up for it. The ending was a bit of a cliff hanger / shocker so I’m definitely excited for book 2. Also, I don’t know about you guys but any time Zeus and Hades came up, I imaged them as Disney’s Hercules Zeus and Hades even though everyone else wasn’t animated. My imagination is weird.
