There is a secret organization that cultivates teenage spies. The agents are called Love Interests because getting close to people destined for great power means getting valuable secrets.
Caden is a Nice: The boy next door, sculpted to physical perfection. Dylan is a Bad: The brooding, dark-souled guy, and dangerously handsome. The girl they are competing for is important to the organization, and each boy will pursue her. Will she choose a Nice or the Bad?
Both Caden and Dylan are living in the outside world for the first time. They are well-trained and at the top of their games. They have to be – whoever the girl doesn’t choose will die.
What the boys don’t expect are feelings that are outside of their training. Feelings that could kill them both.
Q&A with Cale!
Where there any spy movies/books (or tropes) that really inspired or influenced The Love Interest (TLI)? Which ones? (If not, what did inspire TLI?)
Good question! It’s so interesting – when I was writing The Love Interest, I didn’t view it as a spy story. In my head it was this weird meta gay romance type thing. It was only when I saw the cover that I realized that it’s totally a spy novel! But when I was writing I wasn’t using spy stories as a reference. My main influences were Veronica Mars, Community, and gay YA books.
What are the top 3 spy gadgets you would want to have?
AMAZING QUESTION. I’d like a secret recording device so I could play back important conversations – I tend to miss things and it’d be good to know if I was on a date or whatever what the guy said. I’d like a pen that could write secret notes or shoot darts or something just because I think it’d be cool. And does a really cool car count as a spy gadget? If so, that!
TLI seems to put a spin on the stereotypical tropes (and gender roles). What are some of your favourite and least favourite book and movie tropes?
I like pretty much all romantic tropes, actually! I’m a total sucker, and I think they’re cute. The only tropes I don’t like are ones that are that are like the gay best friend trope, or anything where a marginalized person is treated in a stereotypical way, or is used to advance the story of a straight/white/cisgender hero. That always annoys me so much I’ll generally stop reading or watching.
If you could be any character in your novel who would you be and why?
Oh gosh, they all have it pretty rough! Umm I think I’d probably like to be Kaylee, but just because nothing really terrible happens to her. Plus I think her job would be super fun (if you could get past the murky ethics of it).
What is your current favourite read and your go-to book that you love to recommend to everyone?
Ahh so many! Almost too many to list. Some recently released ones I’ve loved include #FAMOUS by Jilly Gagnon, DAUGHTER OF THE PIRATE KING by Tricia Levenseller, SPEAK OF ME AS I AM by Sonia Belasco, THE HATE U GIVE by Angie Thomas, CARAVAL by Stephanie Garber. THE EDGE OF EVERYTHING by Jeff Giles, AFTER THE FALL by Kate Hart, THE UPSIDE OF UNREQUITED by Becky Albertalli and a bunch more. I keep track on my Goodreads, and would recommend any of the books listed here in a heartbeat: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list/20839164?shelf=2017&utm_campaign=mybooksnav&utm_content=mybooks_cta&utm_medium=web&utm_source=homepage
What would Caden’s and Dylan’s favourite dessert be?
I had to think about this for a while. During the plot of TLI, Caden likes blueberries. Afterward, he likes cookie dough and cookie dough ice cream. Dylan likes premium brand dark chocolate. 😀
