In My Mailbox post! Hosted by The Story Siren, In My Mailbox is a chance to showcase new books, ones checked out from the library, bought, won or received for review. All summaries taken from either Goodreads or Amazon.
Got my copy of Life of Pi signed since Yann Martel was doing guest lectures and signings (Unfortunately I missed the guest lecture because I had a nigh class, but my sister still got the book signed for me!). I also got a few books from the library and a few for review from Netgalley (:
(01) Life of Pi by Yann Martel
“After the sinking of a cargo ship, a solitary lifeboat remains bobbing on the wild blue Pacific. The only survivors from the wreck are a sixteen-year-old boy named Pi, a hyena, a wounded zebra, an orangutan—and a 450-pound royal bengal tiger. The scene is set for one of the most extraordinary and beloved works of fiction in recent years.
Thus begins Pi Patel’s epic, 227-day voyage across the Pacific, and the powerful story of faith and survival at the heart of Life of Pi. Worn and scared, oscillating between hope and despair, Pi is witness to the playing out of the food chain, quite aware of his new position within it. When only the tiger is left of the seafaring menagerie, Pi realizes that his survival depends on his ability to assert his own will, and sets upon a grand and ordered scheme to keep from being Richard Parker’s next meal.”
I read this book back in high school and quite enjoyed it and than ended up taking again in University. I think the extra insight is a big reason why I enjoy this book so much. My sister got my book signed for me, so it says “To Cynthia, from your sweet sister, Yann Martel” haha. cute.
(01) Soulless: The Manga Vol 2 aka: Changeless by Gail Carriger & REM (illustrator)
“Alexia Tarabotti, the Lady Woolsey, awakens in the wee hours of the mid-afternoon to find her husband, who should be decently asleep like any normal werewolf, yelling at the top of his lungs. Then he disappears – leaving her to deal with a regiment of supernatural soldiers encamped on her doorstep, a plethora of exorcised ghosts, and an angry Queen Victoria. But Alexia is armed with her trusty parasol, the latest fashions, and an arsenal of biting civility. Even when her investigations take her to Scotland, the backwater of ugly waistcoats, she is prepared: upending werewolf pack dynamics as only the soulless can. She might even find time to track down her wayward husband, if she feels like it.”
Volume 2 basically follows the second book in the series Changeless, if you’re lazy and don’t want to read the book (though I don’t understand why you wouldn’t b/c the series is fantastic but) the manga follows the book almost exactly, plus pretty art (:
(02) Let’s Pretend This Never Happened: A Mostly True Memoir by Jenny Lawson
“Jenny Lawson realized that the most mortifying moments of our lives—the ones we’d like to pretend never happened—are in fact the ones that define us. In the #1 New York Times bestseller, Let’s Pretend This Never Happened, Lawson takes readers on a hilarious journey recalling her bizarre upbringing in rural Texas, her devastatingly awkward high school years, and her relationship with her long-suffering husband, Victor. Chapters include: “Stanley the Magical, Talking Squirrel”; “A Series of Angry Post-It Notes to My Husband”; “My Vagina Is Fine. Thanks for Asking”; “And Then I Snuck a Dead Cuban Alligator on an Airplane.” Pictures with captions (no one would believe these things without proof) accompany the text”
So I don’t normally read a lot of memoirs/non-fictions but this sounds pretty funny, and well I love the cover. Also I think everyone can relate with pretending something never happened, haha.

(01) The Gypsy King by Maureen Fergus
“A runaway slave with a shadowy past, sixteen-year-old Persephone has spent four long years toiling beneath the leering gaze of her despised owner and dreaming of a life where she is free to shape her own destiny. Then, one night, a chance encounter with a handsome chicken thief named Azriel changes her life forever.
Sold to him for a small bag of gold coins, Persephone soon discovers what she already suspected: namely, that Azriel is not what he seems. And when she realizes that he believes Persephone has a special destiny—she is determined to escape him and his impossibly broad shoulders.
But things are no longer as simple as they once were. Torn between her longing for freedom and her undeniable feelings for the handsome thief with the fast hands and the slow smile, Persephone faces the hardest choice she will ever have to make. And no one least of all her—could have imagined the shocking truth her decision will reveal.”
Sounds like a pretty big adventure in the underworld (not actually the underworld, but the seedy underworld of thievery & whatnot)! While I hope there’s a pretty cute romance in the book, I really want a good solid plot. I’m pretty curious as to what her special destiny is haha
(02) Waking Up Married by Mira Lyn Kelly
“Her first thought: “Who are you?”
It’s the morning after her cousin’s bachelorette party in Vegas and Megan Scott wakes up with the mother of all hangovers. Even worse, she’s in a stranger’s penthouse having woken up with something else as well—a funny, arrogant, sexy…husband!
Up until now, finding even a boyfriend had seemed impossible—been there, got the broken heart, sworn off men for good. Then a few martinis with Carter…no, Connor Reed and she’s gone from first meet to marriage in one night!
Megan wants a lawyer. But Connor’s shocking bombshell?
“I don’t want a divorce.””
Basically it’s like a contemporary marriage of (in)convenience and to boot sorta accidental. How would I resist. It’s like a love story backwards haha. Hopefully it’s a fun, cute read.
a bum a student again. A master’s student…oooh. procrastinator. reader. eater. sleeper. music listen-er. movie go-er. Loves food too much.
