Musing About Things: Bookish Subscription

Hi guys, welcome to Book Munchies’ Musing about Things: A Discussion (Post). Inspired by memes such as A Daily Rhythm‘s Musing Monday & Caffeinated Book Reviewer‘s Caffeinated Confessions (etc.), this is a Book Munchies discussion post, where I’ll be rambling about (mostly) book-related things and hopefully you guys will join in on the fun too (:

So today’s topic is: Bookish (monthly) subscriptions!

In the last few years monthly subscription to literally anything you want is super in. And if you’ve notice there’s been a ton of pretty awesome bookish ones.

Owl Crate is probably one of the most popular, where each month is a different theme (usually a surprise) and it comes with a newly release book and a few bookish things. And there’s Illumicrate based out the UK, that’s pretty similar. There’s The Bookish Box that comes with a bookish t-shirt. Book Riot does a quarterly one too that I would love to get my hands on! And there’s oh so many more!

I want them allll!

I do really like the idea of subscription boxes! It’s a chance to check out a book you might never have thought to read, or you might get a book you want anyway! And really, who doesn’t love adorable bookish things like bookmarks, and jewelry and candles. It’s a nice one stop-shop to sample bookish things and usually it’s worth the price, too. Though there is a risk of getting something you don’t like since it’s usually a surprise.

Unfortunately, living in Canada means expensive shipping, and currently with our terrible terrible dollar, it makes it very difficult to subscribe to the many awesome book ones ): So none of those subscription for me yet.

I am subscribed to one, though! The Fandom of the Month box which is a mish-mash of jewelry from pop culture fandoms, including bookish ones! For the price, this subscription was pretty worth it.

I got this beautiful Harry Potter bookmark in Nov! I should really take pictures of all the other stuff sometime...

What are your thoughts on monthly subscription?

Do you subscribe to any monthly subscriptions, bookish or not? Do you like it/find it worth your money?

Any subscription that you really want to check out or need in your life? I love to hear about them!

  1. I really wish I had enough money to get these but like you it’s hard where I live. I live in Australia and the shipping for any of these is way to expensive for me to even thing about them.
    Thanks for the post

  2. I’ve never done monthly subscriptions because I don’t know that they’d be worth the money for me (and I hate surprises, so paying for something and not knowing what I’m getting would drive me batty lol). It’s an interesting idea though!

  3. I’ve only ever heard of monthly bookish subscriptions a few months ago, and I’ve been interested in subsciring to one ever since! I don’t really mind where I subscribe to, I just really want to try it out at lesst once. Unfortunstrly though, I live in Asia, so it’s really hard to find ones that ship in my country without spending so much money, like in your case. 🙁

  4. I don’t subscribe, but that’s because I have so, so many unread books here it doesn’t make sense. I used to get Love Inspired romances from Harlequin, but when I didn’t have time to read them I quit it. Why spend $25 a month to have books lining the office floor.

I’m sure my time will become more my own once the girls are older and this would be something I would consider later on.

  5. I subscribe to magazines, and I think I need to cut down my number of subscriptions. Enjoy! Here is my MUSING MONDAYS POST

  6. not heard of them online before today – will spend sometime looking at them – i have belonged to book clubs before when A book (usually chosen beforehand) arrives it does get exspensive too if one gets a surprise one doesn’t like – I don’t know but am interested in finding out:)

  7. I’ve heard of bookish box subscriptions, but I haven’t subscribed due to money, but I think they are a great idea. I’ve thought about subscribing to Owl Crate and Uppercase Box, they seem to be the ones I hear about most.

  8. I have been so tempted by these boxes. Maybe I will try Owl since its your favorite. I do belong to Audible and get one audio a month, but the package looks like fun!

I actually have signed up for a few boxes. I review them on my blog, so I sign up for 3-4 months of a subscription then review it. Although, I’ve ended up keeping a few because I like them so much! I had OwlCrate – I actually really disliked that one because it came with a lot of random crap that I had no use for. I also had The Bookish Box, which is wonderful, but I ran out of space for tshirts lol. Fandom of the Month is really nice, but I can’t see myself wearing half the jewelry. It’s a great deal, though! My favorite is Uppercase (they focus more on the book, then include 1-2 quality items, rather than filling a box with junk). Another one I like is LitCube, because they focus on a lot of indie authors, which is always great. Sci-Fi and Fantasy books is a new one, but they are already off to a great start! Last month (their second month in business) they had Truthwitch as their book!

There is definitely an abundance of subscriptions you can sign up for! I love them. It’s exciting to get a surprise box every month. Although, it can be a waste of money. You could just go buy the book and the items (if they aren’t box exclusives) if you really want them and not spend 30-40$ per month xD but that takes the fun out of it.

Sorry, that was a long response! I obviously like subscriptions lol

  10. I WISH I CAN, but they’re just too expensive 🙁

  11. I would love to subscribe to monthly book boxes! But I don’t have the money. And I’d rather pick out my own picks since I know what I like and am kinda picky about it. All the little things that come with the books in some subscriptions are so cute though and would be such a fun surprise to get!

  12. I’ve been subscribing to Uppercase for five months now. It costs me $29/month including shipping. I used to spend about that on lattes, so I just kind of moved my splurging over to something that last a bit longer. I am able to justify the whole worry about “what if I don’t like the book?” by knowing that all the books are destined for my classroom library after I read them anyway, and somebody will probably like it! And the add-ons are the kinds of things that I would only ever get as a gift, never for myself, so that has been lots of fun. Again, they’re not always perfect for me, but my kids are eager to take anything I don’t want, and I ADORE some of the items–an inlaid cherry bookmark, Golden Snitch earrings, “‘Sup, Nerd?” socks, and the hand lettered notepad and calendar all come to mind.

Plus, the thrill of receiving a package in the mail once a month? Like the ad says, “Priceless.”

  13. I haven’t done one of these for books because I’ve been afraid of getting something I’ve already read or not really interested in. But I do subscribe to a video game related box for my kids (it doesn’t have video games, but stuff related to them). It’s fun!

  14. I haven’t subscribed to any yet. I’m always afraid I’m going to get a book/item/etc that I already have and then it won’t be worth my money 🙁 I’m trying REALLY hard to be better with my purchasing too but I do want to subscribe to one someday! Love what people put together and think they’re wonderful!

  15. I do subscribe to some. I get Owlcrate every month. I also get Lootcrate, which is suppose to be more for my daughter, but I love it . I had subscribed to Uppercase, but then I had an issue with my credit card that month, so I couldn’t get it. It seems like Uppercase gets all the books i want, so that is probably the one I will stick with. I love all the swag and crap that comes in those boxes. The Fandom of the month sounds like fun too, I have to check it out. Great topic.

  16. I did try the Book Riot box when it first came out and I liked it, but most of the time I was getting books I wouldn’t read and stuff I wouldn’t use so I cancelled. I’ve tried non-bookish boxes like Try the World (which I loved, but struggled with some of the more exotic food stuffs) and Le Tote. I’m sticking with Le Tote. I had clothes shopping and to have someone else ship me clothes to try, it pretty dang awesome.
