Musing About Things: First Book of the Year

Hi guys, welcome to Book Munchies’ Musing about Things: A Discussion (Post). Inspired by memes such as A Daily Rhythm‘s Musing Monday & Caffeinated Book Reviewer‘s Caffeinated Confessions (etc.), this is a Book Munchies discussion post, where I’ll be rambling about (mostly) book-related things and hopefully you guys will join in on the fun too (:

So today’s topic is: First book of the year!

Firstly, Happy New Year everyone!! I can’t believe it’s already 2016!

So today, I thought I talk about first book of the year! I noticed this year (though maybe it happened previous years but I’m just unobservant) that there are bloggers posting about their first book of the (new) year.

For some reason this year, I spent days agonizing over what my first book would be. Which is a little strange since it has never been a thing for me. There was no special consideration, it was just whatever book I happen to want to read next.

According to Goodreads, these's are my 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 first books!

I don’t know why it was such a big thing this year. Guess I just really wanted to start off the year with a bang. I almost felt like I should of saved a “special” book that I wanted to read just for this occassion.

Anyway, I ended up just picking a book that I wanted to read, and the winner was:

A cute retelling of Pride and Prejudice.

I’ve actually finished this one and I’m already on to book #2 of the year. In the end, it didn’t really matter what was my first book of the year, I just need to read one to get the ball rolling for the rest of the year.

Anyway, have you started your first book of the year yet?

Is this a big occasion for you? Or do you just grab the next book on the TBR?

Let me know how you decide on your first book of the new year!

  1. Everyone is making a big deal about the first or last book of the year, but as long as it’s something that I’m enjoying, I don’t think it’s too much of a big deal. I read Crazy Rich Asians and it was so fun! Happy New Year!

    1. Agree, if you enjoy it, that’s all that really matters! Oh Crazy Rich Asian! I’ve been thinking of checking that one out, haha. Happy new year, Jeann!

  2. I had a hard time with the first book this year but I think it was cause I was so tired from staying up on New Years Eve that I couldn’t get into anything, finally settled on Betrayal by A. S. Fenichel which was a Dec. read I didn’t get to. 🙂

    1. That could do it, haha. Hope your enjoying your first book of the year, happy new year!

  3. My First Book of the Year has been a mystery by Mary Higgins Clark for the past two years. I didn’t have any trouble choosing, as I picked a sequel to last year’s book. Check out my First Book Post here:

Here’s what I wrote about today in my MUSING MONDAYS POST

    1. That’s awesome and a perfect plan for picking out the first book of year, definitely makes it easier! Happy new year (:

  4. I seriously neglected historical romances last year but I’m hoping to make up for that because I miss them! This one looks good and it’s an author I’ve never read. I agonize over my first book! I want to be sure I start off with the right one.

    1. Hope you get back into HR soon! There’s definitely been some good ones released lately! Let me know if you need any suggestions 😉 This one was a cute retelling of P&P! Happy new year!

  5. I don’t usually intentionally pick a special book to read as my first one of the new year. It’s usually just whatever I didn’t finish before the end of the previous year or whatever I’m in the mood for at the moment. I do like seeing people’s first book of the year posts though. It’s interesting what books they decide to start off the new year with.

    1. That’s usually my plan too. But agree, definitely enjoy seeing what people pick as their first! Happy new year!

I just finished my first book of the new year — Gold Fame Citrus by Claire Vaye Watkins and it was so good! Perfect start to the year and I totally get it about agonizing over what to read!!

    1. Glad your first book was a good one! I like the title. Happy new year!

  7. I never thought it was a big deal, but like you, I noticed all these posts and comments about people’s first books of the year. It got me all anxious about what book I should read. Finally, I just picked one. And I totally agree with you. It didn’t matter. It’s just a way to get the ball rolling 🙂

I’ve never really thought about the first book of the year. I do like the idea of saving something you really want to read for the new year. I was actually reading something from 2015 so I just finished that and then grabbed a library book I needed to get too!

    1. I’ll see if I remember to save a special book for next year, but there’s a good chance I’ll forget, haha. Sometime it’s easier to just read the next book on the TBR! Happy new year (:

  9. I’ve never paid attention to the first book of the year. This year, I happened to be finishing a book I started in 2015 – Bookishly Ever After by Isabel Bandeira. It was cute and fun!
