Musing About Things: Series Re-reads

Hi guys, welcome to Book Munchies’ Musing about Things: A Discussion (Post). Inspired by memes such as Should Be Reading‘s Musing Monday & Caffeinated Book Reviewer‘s Caffeinated Confessions (etc.), this is a Book Munchies discussion post, where I’ll be rambling about (mostly) book-related things and hopefully you guys will join in on the fun too! Kim this week! 😉

Don’t you just love the anticipation of that next book in the series? It’s coming out in a month, and it’s been a year plus since you last read the previous books. So what to do except re-read them in preparation and excitement.duh

But my huge TBR!

There is always that dilemma of balancing TBR’s with books you want to re-read. And it seems to get especially tough when it comes to books you want to re-read because the new installment is coming out. Then you’re stuck with a deadline. For someone like me (who does not give a fig), it’s very easy to dismiss my ridiculously large TBR in favor of that. It’s like pre-gaming before a frat party or a night at the club with friends. You need to get your head in the game and ready for what’s to come. (And that was a terrible example, but I’m not going to change it!)

The new book has arrived/is published!

So that book you’ve been waiting on is published, and you managed to get your hands on it. Then after a day of reading fast and furious style, you’re left with a book hangover of epic proportions. You love the characters, hated the ending. Loved the endings, but still want more. Love/hate the ending, hated the characters, and can’t find yourself able to stop reading. Whatever the feelings are. Post-new installment of a favored series, you want more! What else can be done? Except re-read the series once again, this time including the newest book! Really, it’s a never ending cycle of re-reading and book series awesomeness.ursula mwahaha

Should I move on with my life? Perhaps.

It’s like a bad breakup, where the book series is the guy who left me and I’m the girl pining away for more love I’ll never get. (Or won’t get until the next book in the series comes out. Oh no. This turned into an emotionally abusive relationship.) Maybe there’s a better way to go about this. I certainly don’t know how to change my ways. But maybe some of you other readers and bloggers out there do! Let me know how you handle your favorite, in-progress series.

  1. That is a dilemma…mine is wanting to read the new books by favorite authors when my stack of review books is toppling…sigh.

  2. This is funny, cause I almost never reread books. I have a pretty good memory so usually I’m okay to keep reading without having to go back to the other books, except now I’m mostly reading fantasies and most of these have very complicated magic systems/plots. What I’ve been trying to do is write down the major plot lines in a word doc, so I’m ready to go for when the next book comes out.

As far rereading goes, the sequel to one of my top favorite series just recently came out and what I did was, read the new book, then went back and read book one and reread book two again xD This is one of those were the magic system is really complicated so it worked very well, plus I just love the characters and couldn’t get enough 😛

  3. I don’t read a lot of series, but I do anxiously await new books by my favorite authors–then once I’ve finished a new title, I figure I need to wait at least a year before the next book will be released. Why can’t authors write as quickly as we can read??? 🙂

  4. I don’t tend to re-read in preparation for the next in the series. I usually manage to remember enough to keep the thread running. Great post and isn’t it amazing how we all have towering TBR’s!

  5. Love your post. You have caught just how I feel about the series I love that only comes out once a year. My Post at Mixed Book Bag

  6. You know, I don’t often reread before starting the next book in a series. And it’s all that TBR’s fault! No time, so I try to find a recap, if I can, of the previous book(s) so I remember. If that’s not there, I just jump in! I do tend to attack the new books, though, and devour them in one sitting, because…it’s mine? LOVE the Ursula gif. 😀

  7. LOL like a bad breakup. It’s true. I’m the worst at remember what happened early, especially if the series isn’t absolutely amazing. I usually just jump in and hope for the best, haha. I think the Lunar Chronicles might be the only one that I constantly re-read, so I’m all good for Winter!
