Musing About Things: Summer Reads

Hi guys, welcome to Book Munchies’ Musing about Things: A Discussion (Post). Inspired by memes such as Should Be Reading‘s Musing Monday & Caffeinated Book Reviewer‘s Caffeinated Confessions (etc.), this is a Book Munchies discussion post, where I’ll be rambling about (mostly) book-related things and hopefully you guys will join in on the fun too (:

So today’s topic is: Summer Reads!!

Okay, so it’s been officially summer for a week (and two days) now!  And you know what that means!

More time for reading! (or at least hopefully!)

This is the time of year that I usually try to “catch up” on my TBR list. Usually it’s the July/August ARCs that I have on my list, but I feel like the summer time is when I also branch away from that and try to catch up on my “reallllly old TBR list”, you know which ones I’m talking about. The one’s that have been just waiting and waiting on your shelf for you to pick it up and read it. Yeaaaah, that list is long.

This is the one I need to attempt to finish this summer. I’m reaaaaaaallllly hoping to finish off George R.R. Martin’s A Clash of Kings. I’ve been almost done for far too long now, oops. (Which means I’m also super behind on the TV show, because I was wanting to read the books first before watching, lol).  I’ve been lunging this one to the beach for a while now.

I tend to binge read quite a bit in the summer time. I don’t know if it’s the extra daylight we get or what but nothing beats catching some rays with a good book (and maybe a good snack on top of that). Oh and there’s always one type that I usually love for my perfect beach reads. I love nothing more than cute, fluffy romantic comedy in the summer time. The more refreshingly adorable, the better.  Because you know summer lovin’ had me a blast~

Here are five recommendations for ” (my) perfect beach reads” that I’ve read this year!

1. On the Fence: It’s both a Best Friends romance AND a Neigbours romance!!! Also, super cute family antics. [my review]

2. Art of Lainey: Fake dates, no love triangle and the bad boy with the heart of gold. Yup. [my review]

3. The Chapel Wars: Another cute neigbour/rival story. Set in Vegas with all the wedding chapels. [my review]

4. Ask Again Later: A cute paranormal (lite) romance, flip a coin and see! [my review]

5. Fangirl: Its a little bit “heavier” than the other books, but it’s really made for all the fangirls. [my review]

Okay so here are 5 “beach” reads (that are released this summer) that I’m hoping to get in!

1. Magnolia: Okay this one is a bit cheating, since I need to read it for a blog tour, but it is a neighbour romance and a hate-to-love romance!

2. Just Like the Movies: This one’s a cheat too, since I need to review it. But really, this book basically screeeeeeams summer timeeeeeeee~ reeaaaad meeeeee!

3. Ruin and Rising: So this one doesn’t really fit my “typical summer read’ but! It’s the last book in the series & I’m so excited for the finale!

4. Landline: I just picked this one up! It’s Rainbow Rowell so you know it’ll be full of heart and cuteness.

5. Isla and the Happily Ever After: More Stephanie Perkins! If there’s anyone who does awesome adorable “summer” reads, it’s her.

Anyway! What are your guys’ summer reads? Do you make a special list or just keep chugging along with your TBR?

Do you have certain types of genre that you just love to read in the summer time?

What are your can’t wait to read books this summer!

  1. AH! Loved On the Fence, The Art of Lainey and Fangirl. Perfect beach reads! I really want to read Ask Again Later and The Chapel Wars though. They both sound great! I’m actually getting ready to read the first Game of Thrones book. Pretty excited for it, despite it’s daunting size! Great post, Cyn! I really enjoyed it!

    1. Definitely check them out, they’re uber cute haha.
Yay! I remember starting Game of Thrones, it scared me and I need the glossary in the back so badly because I could never remember who was who for the longest time! Good luck, hope you enjoy it!!

  2. I’m the opposite over here and summertime is my busy time, so my reading goes way down sigh…. I’m still trying to get through at least a book a week, but it’s hit or miss right now!

    1. Aww, hopefully you can still sneak in some reading!

  3. I think On the Fence would make a perfect beach read, it just sounds so sweet amd cute. Like you mentioned, I’m trying to clean up that tbr list too, and I’m excited for so many up-coming books.Eeeek!

    1. I find it so hard to put a dent in the TBR list because there’s always so many good books coming out! It’s a terrible cycle 😉

  4. Landline is on my TBR list for this summer–just waiting to get to the top of the library hold list!

    1. Yay! I hope you get it soon, and we both enjoy it (:

    1. Thanks (:

  5. I totally love to read books according to the seasons. So, yes, chic lit is a summer fav for sure! something that doesn’t take a lot of thinking to get into – luv Victoria Connelly’s various JA variations on Mr Darcy and have a few others on my review list coming up..=)

    1. Haha, that’s awesome! Ooh, I love takes on Mr. Darcy! Will have to check it out, thanks for the rec!

  6. Love this topic! I was just thinking about the different types of books I consider good beach/summer reads. They can’t be too heavy or serious because I can’t concentrate at the beach (or in the heat). I love page turners, romantic books, suspenseful books — and I also use the summer to catch up on series and my review reading!
Thanks so much for stopping by! Jen @ YA Romantics

  7. All of June I read romances and such, and slowly have turned to suspense, paranormal woo-woo and fantasy..Fantastic topic and your gifs rock

  8. Even though it’s Winter here, I love summer reads that are out! They are really quickly read contemporaries that are light, fluffy and perfect and breezy for a beach read. I totally know what you mean about knocking off those books on your TBR that have been there for ages! I loved Ask Again Later and Fangirl, and the other books are ones that I really want to read too. Great recs lovely!

  9. Oh my gosh my list for old TBRs is miles long. Millllessss. I should do one of these.

  10. I also binge read, in the summer.
There are so many good books, it;s hard to choose.

  11. I’m not normally a “summer reads” kind of person…but this year I’m trying it out! I’m on vacation right now, and I brought a bunch of contemporaries and I’m going to see how it goes! I’ve always been somebody who WANTS to like contemporary YA a lot more than I actually do…but I’m hoping that I picked out some good ones 🙂
