Really Really Short Review: Cold-Hearted Rake by Lisa Kleypas

Welcome to Really Really Short Reviews were the name is long and the reviews are short! Because sometimes short is that much sweeter. (Also, because I’m really lazy!) And there might be quotes too (lots and lots)! (Because everyone loves quotes, right?)

A twist of fate . . .
Devon Ravenel, London's most wickedly charming rake, has just inherited an earldom. But his powerful new rank in society comes with unwanted responsibilities . . . and more than a few surprises. His estate is saddled with debt, and the late earl's three innocent sisters are still occupying the house . . . along with Kathleen, Lady Trenear, a beautiful young widow whose sharp wit and determination are a match for Devon's own.
A clash of wills . . .
Kathleen knows better than to trust a ruthless scoundrel like Devon. But the fiery attraction between them is impossible to deny—and from the first moment Devon holds her in his arms, he vows to do whatever it takes to possess her. As Kathleen finds herself yielding to his skillfully erotic seduction, only one question remains:
Can she keep from surrendering her heart to the most dangerous man she's ever known?

Review:

“It’s far easier to make a heart stop beating entirely than to keep it from loving the wrong person.”

Yay, the Queen of HR is back! I was hella excited for this book and while it didn’t blow me away, I enjoyed it and am happy that there’s more Lisa Kleypas historical romances!

Devon and Kathleen were a nice couple all and all, though they bickered quite a bit. Devon was a cold-hearted rake, though his heart grew three sizes by the end. And Kathleen seem to have a sick up her butt a lot of the time, but she got better by the end, too. They did have some cute moments.

Perhaps her telegram had been a bit dramatic. “I wasn’t really going to bring lawyers into it. I only wanted to gain your attention.”

His reply was soft. “You always have my attention.”

&

“There’s only one way for me to prove that I will love you and be faithful to you for the rest of my life. And that’s by loving you and being faithful to you for the rest of my life. Even if you don’t want me. Even if you choose not to be with me. I’m giving you all the time I have left. I vow to you that from this moment on, I will never touch another woman, or give my heart to anyone but you. If I have to wait sixty years, not a minute will have been wasted- because I’ll have spent all of them loving you.”

What I did love was Devon’s brother, who grew up so much.

“No, he keeps the schedule of a cat. Long hours of slumber interrupted by brief periods of self-grooming.”

And Devon’s recently inherited cousins, Helen, Cassandra, and Pandora.

“Pandora, you promised to abide by the rules.”
“I do,” Pandora protested, looking chagrined. “I follow all the rules that I can remember.”

Also, love, love, love the side story of Helen and Winterborne! What a tease, I’m dying for the next book.

“What matters, then?” she dared to ask.

His dark gaze held hers. “That he loves. That he’s searching. Like the rest of us poor devils, he has no way of knowing if he’ll ever have his heart’s desire.”

And you? Helen longed to ask. What are you searching for?

  1. This sounds cute even though it wasn’t your favorite. A mediocre Lisa Kleypas is still pretty great! I now feel the pull to go reread Devil in Winter. That may be my favorite by her. I’ll have to go find this one. Not sure why I haven’t gotten a copy yet!

    1. Oh man, I’m definitely feeling a re-read of Devil in Winter! I’d say that’s my favourite too (: This one’s worth checking out, if anything, for Helen and Winterborne!

  2. Confession: I have not yet tried this author. Bummer this was just ok, I am curious to do you have a title you recommend I try her with?

    1. Her HRs are totally worth checking out!
Hmm, I could recommend Devil in Winter (it’s my favourite, and most people’s too!). It’s the 3rd in the Wallflowers series, but can be read as a standalone. The Hathaways series is awesome too!

    2. Oh and Worth Any Price is awesome too. I think that one is actually my favourite, or at least most re-read haha. And Dreaming of You!

  3. oh loved reading your thoughts on this one!! I really LOVE this author. I did enjoy reading this one, but I didn’t LOVE it like some of her other works. I do have high hopes for the next book though. But I was like you, I was thrilled when I heard she was returning to HR.

    1. Glad to hear you enjoyed this, too! Definitely high hopes for the next book and more Lisa Kleypas!

  4. I just recently started reading HR and Lisa Kleypas is one of the only authors I know. Do you have any author recommendations?

    1. If you’re like cute and fluffy HR, definitely check out Julia Quinn and Tessa Dare! Sarah MacLean’s and Lorraine Heath’s books are awesome too! Let me know what type of HR books you like and I can recommend more! I love recommending books (:
      Thanks for stopping by!
