Miss Layla Starling, the young, beautiful, and extremely wealthy heiress, is the talk of London. Until now, she’s managed to evade the marriage noose. Despite the fact that she is unfortunately American, she’s received a staggering number of offers. And turned down every one.

St. John Evernight does not want to admit the relief he feels every time he hears that she has rejected one of her suitors. Which is unfair of him. Layla deserves to be happy. But he can not offer her happiness. He will never be normal, never be anything but a freak in her world. So St. John resolves to keep his distance, until he is recruited by the Society for the Suppression of Supernaturals to guard Layla. For she is in grave danger, and he is about to learn the full extent of his powers.

Review:

A satisfying conclusion to the paranormal Darkest London series, I’m a little sad to see it end! This book features the last of the Evernight siblings, St. John (aka. Sin), who’s been a bit estrange from his family, and Layla, the American heiress with a dark secret!

This was such an enjoyable read with a very cute childhood/second chance romance between Sin and Layla. Sin is quite the brooding hero…

“You’re brooding again,” Augustus remarked.

“I’m not brooding. This is simply my face.”

and is determined to keep Layla safe (which to him means, keeping his distance and not marrying her), whereas Layla definitely has different plans for them (with include sassiness, flirting, and making someone a little jealous). I loved Layla’s strong, cheerful demeanor! And I love how much she protects Sin as much as he tries to protect her.

Layla burst out laughing, a husky yet lilting sound that had more heads turning, this time in rapt interest. “Saint John, protector of virtue and destroyer of pinkies across the kingdom.”

The banter between them is always fun. Arguing and teasing and steamy nights, there’s always a spark between them.

“We always snuck into each other’s rooms.”

He watched her with narrow eyes. “We were children then.”

“Captain Obvious rides again,” Layla murmured.

The plot of the story while is standalone, does also help wrap up a lot of the bigger picture arc from the previous books. I enjoyed all the action and intensity surrounding Layla’s secret. There’s a ton of revelations! There’s also a secondary romance that I really enjoyed and found interesting; it was quite Romeo and Juliet-esque. And we get to catch up with a lot of the past characters, whom I always love!

Overall, it was a fun and a happy indulgent kind of read. I quite adored Sin and Layla and their journey to happiness. Definitely worth picking up if you enjoy this series.

“Because you, St. John Evernight, are mine. Whether you will it or not. Your heart and soul have been mind to keep since I climbed up in the bloody tree to drive you mad. Mine to protect. And if you are bloody broken, than I bloody well will be here to help you put the pieces back together.”
