Review: How I Stole Johnny Depp’s Alien Girlfriend by Gary Ghislain

Publisher: Chronicle Books  (June 8th 2011)
Hardcover: 208 pages
Rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

David Gershwin’s summer is about to take a turn for the weird. When his dad’s new patient Zelda tells him shes from outer space and on a quest to take Johnny Depp back to her planet, he knows he should run away screaming. But with one look from her mean, green eyes, David’s hooked, and soon he’s leaping across rooftops, running from police, and stealing cars just to stay by her side. He might not be a typical hero, but David’s going to get the girl even if it takes him to the ends of the earth or beyond.

Review:

A funny and wacky adventure about a boy named David, who’s fallen head over heels for alien girl Zelda. Zelda (whom everyone thinks is just violent & crazy and not an alien) is here on earth to find her “chosen one” who she’s sure is Johnny Depp, and David is here to help, no matter how crazy and strange the situation he’s gotten himself into has become.

It was a funny read, and my favourite relationship in the story was not Zelda and David’s (though they make quite the pair), but actually David and his ‘step-sister’ Malou’s, who goes to show that you don’t have to be blood related to be a real family. As they run around Paris creating disasters left and right, usually hilarity ensues

Just some notes: While the book is categorized as young adult, it’s really more leaning towards the young (ie. middle school years) but there’s definitely nothing wrong with that! If you just want a easy read that’s cute and funny this is the book for you! It’s a relaxing romp around Paris 3.5 out of 5 stars. (Also the cover art has the perfect sci-fi feel to it, so lovely).
