Annith has watched her gifted sisters at the convent come and go, carrying out their dark dealings in the name of St. Mortain, patiently awaiting her own turn to serve Death. But her worst fears are realized when she discovers she is being groomed by the abbess as a Seeress, to be forever sequestered in the rock and stone womb of the convent. Feeling sorely betrayed, Annith decides to strike out on her own.

She has spent her whole life training to be an assassin. Just because the convent has changed its mind doesn’t mean she has…

Mortal Heart by Robin LaFevers is the conclusion in the His Fair Assassin trilogy. This book focuses on Annith’s story. We first met Annith in Grave Mercy as she was yet again passed over to do Mortain’s bidding in favor of Ismae. This time, Annith isn’t going to let anyone stop her from experiencing the world and confine her to the convent.

It was amazing to see her character develop in this book. Before we got bits and pieces from Ismae and Sybella’s perspectives, but it was refreshing to truly understand her. To see what makes her tick. And to see that she wasn’t this dull, demure girl who worked hard at excelling. Sure, she really was hardworking, almost obsessively so, with her training at the convent, but she also had all these fascinating layers.

Balthazar was a bit of a wild card for me. I was torn between loving him and finding him incredibly one dimensional for a good chunk of the book. Then came all the plot twists and secrets revealed. End result: loved him.

Robin LaFevers has deftly created this rich time for readers to get immersed in. From all the little details, you can tell the time period is well researched and easily transports a reader to a distant past. It’s a large part of what makes this trilogy worth reading.

    1. I enjoyed Grave Mercy, but didn’t love it. However, the two subsequent books were AMAZING. So hopefully you’ll love them all. 🙂

  3. Yay 5 stars! I had to stop because I wasn’t able to find time to power through it, but this book is totally ones of these kinds you don’t put down, so I’m gonna try to finish it after I’m done exams 😐 haha.
