Can the fiercest master of battle conquer a woman’s heart?
They call him the Demon Highlander. The fearsome Lieutenant Colonel Liam MacKenzie is known for his superhuman strength, towering presence, and fiery passion in the heat of battle. As Laird to the MacKenzie clan, the undefeated Marquess has vanquished his foes with all rage and wrath of his barbaric Highland ancestors. But when an English governess arrives to care for his children, the master of war finds himself up against his greatest opponent... in the game of love.
Defying all expectations, Miss Philomena is no plain-faced spinster but a ravishing beauty with voluptuous curves and haughty full lips that rattle the Laird to his core. Unintimidated by her master’s raw masculinity and savage ways, the headstrong lass manages to tame not only his wild children but the beast in his soul. With each passing day, Liam grows fonder of Miss Mena—and more suspicious. What secret is she hiding behind those emerald eyes? What darkness brought her to his keep? And how can he conquer this magnificent woman’s heart... without surrendering his own?

This was a really good read though it can definitely be a hard read in that it really deals with some tough issues. This can be a trigger for abuse and terrible manipulation.

I really feel for both Mena and Liam, who both had lived through some pretty horrific things, which only made their happily ever after that much more happy!

With a reputation as a demon, it’s pretty cute that Mina still teases Liam and that there’s still light moments in the story.

A caustic sound escaped his throat, half amusement, half bewilderment. “Am I truly such an ogre?”

“Not an ogre, per se.” Her smile deepened. “But I recall a story I read as a child about a rather distempered troll—who lived under a bridge and frightened all who crossed it—to whom I could possibly perceive a resemblance.”

I loved seeing their relationship go from so much awkwardNess, tension and uncertainty…

“She called me an overbearing brute.”

“Oh, Lord.” She hid a laughing smile behind her fan. “What did ye say to that?”

“I kissed her. And she kissed me back.”

“Marry her, Liam,”she ordered, snapping the lace fan closed. “As soon as you can. Tomorrow if possible.”

…To this fantastic determination of not letting go of this dicovery of true love.

“It’s impossible to deny it, lass.” He smiled down at her, and Mena suddenly knew that one could feel the warm rays of the sun even in the dark of night.

“Try as ye will to resist me, I’m after ye, Mena, and I willna claim ye until ye yield. But I’ll not stop until every last one of yer defenses are in ashes at my feet.”

To go with the romance is a lovely story about a family learning to break down some barriers and rebuild connections. I love the secondary characters and also the return of the characters from the previous two books. There’s also some ssuspense woven through the story, too.

Overall, a beautifully written story about two people’s second chance at happiness. If you love great romances, brooding highlander heroes, sassy heroines, and heartwarming stories, this is a not to be missed read.

  2. I’ve seen so many mentions of Kerrigan Byrne lately! I’ve not read anything by her, but I think I may give this series a try. This particular book scares me a little, because of the warning you gave at the beginning of your review. But the romance sounds nice. 🙂 Wonderful review, Cyn!
