The rules: no kissing on the mouth, no staying the night, no telling anyone, and above all… No falling in love.

Anna Jones just wants to finish college and figure out her life. Falling for star quarterback Drew Baylor is certainly not on her to do list. Confident and charming, he lives in the limelight and is way too gorgeous for his own good. If only she could ignore his heated stares and stop thinking about doing hot and dirty things with him. Easy right?

Too bad he’s committed to making her break every rule…

Football has been good to Drew. It’s given him recognition, two National Championships, and the Heisman. But what he really craves is sexy yet prickly Anna Jones. Her cutting humor and blatant disregard for his fame turns him on like nothing else. But there’s one problem: she’s shut him down. Completely.

That is until a chance encounter leads to the hottest sex of their lives, along with the possibility of something great. Unfortunately, Anna wants it to remain a hook up. Now it’s up to Drew to tempt her with more: more sex, more satisfaction, more time with him. Until she’s truly hooked. It’s a good thing Drew knows all about winning.

All’s fair in love and football…Game on.

Review:

So I quite adore Kristen Callihan’s Darkest London series (an awesome paranormal historical romance series) and while this is a totally different style, I knew I had to check it out (because romance is romance! No matter the era, right?)

The Hook Up is considered a “New Adult” and it’s everything NA is. It’s contemporary setting, with two twenty-something college kids, (one’s a football star, the other is a slightly awkward academia) just trying to figure out what life really means, among all the romance and raging hormones (that’s my euphemism for sex, if it wasn’t obvious enough…because there’s a lot of it in this book).  When Drew and Anna first meet in class, it was like lightning hit them and it was love lust at first sight. The Hoop Up takes your typical football and geeky girl love story and gives it a just a little twist~

I adored Drew. He’s our football star with a good heart. I liked that Drew’s the one that actually believes in true love and doesn’t just want a hook up with Anna (though he definitely tempts her, to keep her interested of course until he can make her fall madly in love with him). Anna, on the other, just doesn’t believe in true love and only wants some hot sex with no strings attached (and like I said, there’s a lot of it). Of course, a good story can’t just be about the lusting, so we do actually get to see Drew and Anna build a bond, an actual relationship, which is nice. Both are going through some struggles and they have each other to help out (even if Anna thinks otherwise).  And really, it’s hard to resist Drew’s charm.

The story is told from both POV, so we get a little perspective from both of them. Nothing is too utterly surprising for what you’d expect from a NA. It’s got some really cute moments and Drew is such a lovable character, you definitely want to root for him. While this NA genre hasn’t really won me over, Kristen Callihan always writes a lovely story, so I’m happy I read it.

The nurse agrees, but when she picks up the vase nearest to Drew, he stops her with a quick, “Wait.” The bed squeaks under him as he leans over and plucks a small yellow rosebud from the base. He breaks the stem off, leaving only about three inches, and then, without ceremony, tucks the rose into the meat of my high ponytail. I blush, and the nurse beams again. But Drew merely flops back onto his pillows, crossing his arms over his broad chest and glares at the TV – which isn’t even on.

“He’s a natural charmer, your man,” says the nurse, as if she’s a proud mama.

“Oh yes,” I murmur, grinning at Drew, who’s blushing now. “Especially when he’s grouchy.”

“Humph…” Drew’s brow knit tighter together. “Rather look at you anyway.” (73% eARC)
