Romantic Thursday Review: Must Love Dukes by Elizabeth Michelse

Romantic Thursday
It’s Romantic Thursday with Bookmunchies! So why is Thursday romantic? Because I like Thursday and I like romance! Basically, I just love romance, in YA books, in adult, contemporary, historical, whichever the genre and sometimes I’m too lazy to write full reviews but I do love sharing fun quotes or just gushing about characters. So that’s what Romantic Thursday is for! To share my love. May it be through actual full reviews, quick reviews, or just fun quotes.

She Can’t Resist the Dare

Lillian Phillips could not imagine how her quiet, simple life had come to this. Blackmailed by the Mad Duke of Thornwood into accepting one wild dare after another…all because of a pocket watch. Desperate to recover her beloved father’s pawned timepiece, Lily did something reckless and dangerous and delicious—something that led to a night she’d never forget.

He has a Reputation for Scandal

When Devon Grey, Duke of Thornwood, runs into a mesmerizing, intoxicating, thieving woman who literally stole from his bedchamber—with his new pocket watch—Devon plots his revenge. If the daring wench likes to play games, he’s happy to oblige. After all, what’s the use of being the Mad Duke if you can’t have some fun? But the last laugh might just be on him…

Must Love Dukes is an adorable and silly read, with fun, enjoyable characters.

I loved the “prologue” of the story, when Lily and Devon meet the first time.

Yet, as he was pivoting to continue down the street, something made him look back once more. It was then he caught sight of the voluminous skirts of a blue dress extending from either side of a light post. The occupant of the dress was carefully hidden from view, but she was no spy. She clearly underestimated the size of the dress she was wearing.

Lily resorts to a little scheming and thievery to retrieve  her beloved father’s pocket watch (which of course Devon has). But before that disaster strike, they have a really cute little friendship as they get to know each other, telling mostly truths, while trying to hid who they really are from each other. There’s just a spark between them.

When they meet again (with Devon divested of the pocket watch and upset he got tricked by a girl) during the season (where Lily’s brothers are trying to sell her off marry her to the highest bidder) Devon blackmails Lily to get his revenge. But not int the way you think. He blackmails her into do silly pranks (most to to her suitors) to mostly keep him entertained, but to also help Lily too. They’re pretty funny (the pranks, and actually Lily and Devon together).

I really enjoyed this romance because it was sweet and Lily and Devon had  a nice chemistry between them. The story and romance was never overly dramatic, but with just enough emotion that I’m invested in their happiness. Both characters alone are pretty cute and entertaining. Lily, overall is a pretty likable heroine, with a strong, determine personality, though I really did wish she had more of backbone when it came to her horrible brothers. Devon, is your alpha male/duke but without as much angst and brooding. He’s charming, creative, and kind of silly.

“I’m planing to sit there by that dirty window. I always find the afternoon light to be the nicest when viewed through a hundred years of grime.” He took a few steps across the room before turning to look at her with an easy smile. “Care to join me?”

Overall, it was enjoyable historical romance filled with fun pranks and a cute romance. Light and fluffy, it’s an easy read for when you want something simple and sweet.
