Romantic Thursday Review: When the Rogue Returns by Sabrina Jeffries

Romantic Thursday
It’s Romantic Thursday with Bookmunchies! So why is Thursday romantic? Because I like Thursday and I like romance! Basically, I just love romance, in YA books, in adult, contemporary, historical, whichever the genre and sometimes I’m too lazy to write full reviews but I do love sharing fun quotes or just gushing about characters. So that’s what Romantic Thursday is for! To share my love. May it be through actual full reviews, quick reviews, or just fun quotes.

Victor Cale never imagined that his sweet, shy bride, Isabella, would use her talents for creating exquisite imitation jewels criminally. But there’s no denying that her handiwork was used in the theft of the Dutch royal diamonds– right after Isa disappeared into the night.

Ten years later, Victor is sent to Edinburgh to investigate a wealthy baron’s mysterious bride-to-be… who turns out to be Isa, masquerading as an alluring widow. No longer the meek girl he once knew, Isa boldly asserts that it was Victor who abandoned her, after he helped steal the royal diamonds!

Piecing together the truth of the past reawakens their volatile passions, which burns hotter than ever. But with a decade of secrets between them, Victor and Isa must trust each other to bring the real thieves to justice– without getting burned themselves.

Sabrina Jeffries never seems to fail to delivery a sweet romance for me (or at least with the Hellions of Helsteads and the first of the Duke’s Men). I admit, I was a bit wary going into this because I wasn’t expecting Victor,  the lost cousin of the Duke of Lyon, to have his book so soon and the plot totally has the potential to annoy the living daylights out of me. Nothing frustrates me more than when whole main conflict is based around a misunderstanding that can be easily resolved simply by talking about it.

This is definitely a second chance at love romance. Victor and Isa married young but are separated by Isa’s scheming sister and husband, each thinking the worst of each other. Years later they meet again. Here’s where I was scared that the misunderstanding would drag on but thank the high heavens that didn’t happen. They were able to to resolve that pretty quickly, all the while not just going back to being in love but slowly building their romance up again. In line with Jeffries’ romance, there’s some action to go with the romance too. There’s scheming! A  jewelry heist! A kidnapping!

Overall the writing was wonderful and enjoyable. The romance was sweet and the ending was great. The only reason why this book isn’t getting a higher rating from me is because the story is pretty slow. I enjoyed it but it didn’t quite have the punch that I was hoping for. The ending was very entertaining and I love the set up for Tristan’s story.  Definitely can’t wait for that.

Then he kissed her so sweetly that for a moment she was eighteen again, sneaking off to be with her bold young soldier.

When he drew back, all the love in the world shone in his eyes. “Because  I know for certain that my heart will always hear yours.”
