Romantic Thursday Review: Sapphires Are an Earl’s Best Friend by Shana Galen

Romantic Thursday
It’s Romantic Thursday with Bookmunchies! So why is Thursday romantic? Because I like Thursday and I like romance! Basically, I just love romance, in YA books, in adult, contemporary, historical, whichever the genre and sometimes I’m too lazy to write full reviews but I do love sharing fun quotes or just gushing about characters. So that’s what Romantic Thursday is for! To share my love. May it be through actual full reviews, quick reviews, or just fun quotes.

What better disguise for a secret agent than that of a courtesan?

Lily Dawson, dubbed the Countess of Charm, is a spy working for the Crown to uncover a traitor.

Andrew Booth-Payne, Earl of Darlington, wants to hate Lily for taking up with his father, but something about Lily intrigues him.

When he discovers there is more to her flirtation than greed, he knows he must help her uncover a traitor. Even if that traitor is his own father…

So this is the third book (and last) book of Jewels of the Ton series, featuring the last jewel, Lily Dawson, the Countess of Charm. It follows right behind the If You Give a Rake a Ruby tail, with the overlying arc story of looking for the Diamonds in the Rough. I really enjoyed Lily in this book because she’s the awesome spy and basically the hero of the book (rather than have the gentleman come in and save the “damsel in distress”). She’s feisty and independent. The romance is a little crazy and the action is pretty cool.

So the romance; it’s a bit crazy. Lily has been head over heels for Andrew since the day she laid her eyes on him. Too bad, he only had eyes for Juliette (of , which you’ll notice Andrew is, also). But Juliette is now happily in love. Lily is still in love Andrew, but she’s got a new assignment and that’s seduce and discover the secrets to expose a murderer and traitor to the crown, which happens to Andrew’s father. She decided it’s time to get over Andrew. But suddenly Andrew’s finally seeing Lily for the first time, and not just because she’s trying to seduce her father. So yup, he’s got some groveling and winning over to do.

Did you follow that? It was a thing to follow the love line but I just love when the Hero (Andrew in this case) finally realizes who he truly loves and has to work a bit to win her. Truth be told, it took me a bit to warm up to Andrew, he’s kind of a self-righteous jerk at first.

“I can take care of myself,” she said, straightening her back and all but bristling at the idea that she couldn’t.

“I know you can, but I can take care of you too.” He leaned in closer to her, brushing his mouth against hers. “Let me.”

Along with the romance, we get a conclusion for the big arc story that being in the When You Give A Duke a Diamond & follows into If You Give a Rake a Ruby. There’s a good amount of scheming and espionage going on. It’s a bit of a rollercoaster ride of secrets and emotions all around. Bits of the book was a bit slow and I wasn’t always with it, but overall, it was intriguing.

I’m happy that Lily got her happy ending and while this book didn’t blow me away, it was a satisfying ending (with an interesting surprise!) to the series and easily my favourite book of the three.
