“I’m hanging out of the window of my office, sneaking a cigarette and trying to read Margins in the dull winter light, when there’s a noise I haven’t heard before. All right, the noise — crash, bang, etc. — I probably have heard before, but it’s coming from underneath me, which isn’t right. There shouldn’t be anything underneath me: I’m on the bottom floor. But the ground shakes as if something’s trying to push up from below, and I think about other people’s mothers shaking out their duvets or even God shaking out the fabric of space-time; then I think, F*cking hell, it’s an earthquake, and I drop my cigarette and run out of my office at roughly the same time that the alarm starts sounding.” (pg. 3)
“Sometimes I like to think I live with ghosts. Not from my own past — I don’t believe in those sorts of ghosts — but wispy bits of ideas and books that hang in the air like silk puppets.” (pg. 33)
I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump, so I asked my manager for a recommendation. She led me to The End of Mr. Y. And thus far it’s been awesome. There was so much trouble picking something for this teaser (as you can probably tell by the two teasers I picked) because most couple of sentences I love lead to full paragraphs of awesome. I also feel compelled to admit that the “F*cking” above does not actually contain an asterisk in the text, however, I feel it unnecessary to explicitly use profanity on my blog, even in a quote.

“I’ll make a salad.”
Phil made a gagging sound as he rooted through a drawer for pizza cutter.
“I’m trying to save you from scurvy, Phil. You should thank me.”
“My Flintstone Gummy meets all my anti-scurvy needs, thank you very much.”
“Plus, it makes you so mature and classy.” (4% eARC Kindle)
“You’ll be like a prom ninja.” He smiled slightly
Relief made me grin. “And then you can whisk me off in your mighty day-care van and rescue me from the evil troll.”
He did a slight bow. “Consider it done.” (46% eARC Kindle)
So this book was pretty cute. Also, I totally have Flinstone gummy vitamins, there are very mature and classy! Lots of pretty hilarious moments in the book and I don’t want to spoil anything, but any guy willing to which me in the mighty day-care van and rescue me from the evil troll is a pretty stand up guy, ha.
