Musing About Things: Commitment Phobia

Hi guys, welcome to Book Munchies’ Musing about Things: A Discussion (Post). Inspired by memes such as Should Be Reading‘s Musing Monday & Caffeinated Book Reviewer‘s Caffeinated Confessions (etc.), this is a Book Munchies discussion post, where I’ll be rambling about (mostly) book-related things and hopefully you guys will join in on the fun too (:
……………….

So today’s topic is: Commitment Phobia – the fear of committing/finishing a series.

I don’t know if commitment phobia is the best way to say it, but I’ve realized lately that I’m super terrible at finishing series.

Especially trilogies. I’ll read the first two, but for some reason, I just never get around to reading the last book. And it’s not even the series that I’ve gotten bored of and don’t feel like finishing but even the ones I really want to/mean to. For example, Mortal Heart by Robin LaFevers. I actually started that one, than at some point had set it down and when I recently bought a physical copy realized I didn’t finish it (oops).

Same thing with Ruin and Rising by Leigh Barudgo! I’ve shocked by co-blogger Kim with my terrible ability to finish series, haha. Seriously, I have a long list of series I need to finish. Maybe it’s less the fear of fully committing to a series, but an attachment issue. I don’t want to finish the series because than it would truly be over!?!? I don’t even know.

So what I’ve learn about myself from this post is that I (thankfully) don’t have an issue about not finishing a series! I hope to finish them but it doesn’t eat away at me if I don’t.

I’m also super terrible at picking up just even the sequel, despite usually wanted to read it. I think it’s because of the wait time between books, I end up with so many on my TBR that unless it blew me away, I tend to shelve it.

……………..
Anyway, do you guys have problems with finishing series? Always leaving the last one hanging? Or are you a ‘must finish of the whole series not matter what!’ kind of person?

Anyone series finale that’s just been sitting there waiting for you? cough Alligent, Requiem cough cough.

Do you have an strategies to help get you to read a whole series? I’ve notice when the entire series is available and I binge read them, I’ll get it done more often than when I have to wait for the final book to come out.

  1. I really prefer not to read the kind of series where you have to read them all….I like it when there is a recurring character, but you can read whatever book in the series you want, as they could be stand-alone books…if that makes sense.

    Here is my MUSINGS POST

    1. Yes! I know what you mean. That’s what I actually love about romance series. The universe/characters carries over, but each book is still stand-alone.

  2. I don’t read many series anymore, but I’m a firm believer that you should read what you wish! So–if you don’t feel like finishing a series, no harm/no foul! And maybe someday you’ll find that you’re in the mood to go back and revisit it. Your books, your rules, right? 🙂

    1. Very true! Thanks the reminder ;)!

  3. I wrote a post about this very same thing! I think I’m afraid to finish them or something. Even series that I adore often go unfinished for months … or years! I ove how you call it a fear of commitment – that’s totally it!
