Welcome to Really Really Short Reviews were the name is long and the reviews are short! Because sometimes short is that much sweeter. (Also, because I’m really lazy!) And there might be quotes too (lots and lots)! (Because everyone loves quotes, right?)

Anything can happen once upon a con…

When geek girl Elle Wittimer sees a cosplay contest sponsored by the producers of Starfield, she has to enter. First prize is an invitation to the ExcelsiCon Cosplay Ball and a meet-and-greet with the actor slated to play Federation Prince Carmindor in the reboot. Elle’s been scraping together tips from her gig at the Magic Pumpkin food truck behind her stepmother’s back, and winning this contest could be her ticket out once and for all—not to mention a fangirl’s dream come true.

Teen actor Darien Freeman is less than thrilled about this year’s ExcelsiCon. He used to live for conventions, but now they’re nothing but jaw-aching photo sessions and awkward meet-and-greets. Playing Federation Prince Carmindor is all he’s ever wanted, but the diehard Starfield fandom has already dismissed him as just another heartthrob. As ExcelsiCon draws near, closet nerd Darien feels more and more like a fake—until he meets a girl who shows him otherwise.

Review:

Super cute and geeky with a few things that drove me bonkers. This was definitely a fun modern day geeky spin on Cinderalla.

I totally felt for Elle and having to deal with the worst step-mother and step-sister ever. Elle’s relationship with her dad was so heartwarming and I loved he was able to inspire her to go for her dreams.

My dad said that the impossible is only impossible if you don’t even try. So I want to try.”

I liked that Darien (our prince charming) while is a teen heartthrob is also an awkward geeky boy (especially when it comes to having a crush on a girl). Gotta also feel for Darien who is stuck with the worst father ever. But seriously, I love Darien and his inner thoughts.

I’ve met my doom, and it isn’t even breakfast yet.

Elle and Darien were darn cute pretty cute (if not a itty-bitty instalove, but I’ll let it slide). And yay for Darien and pretty darn swoony when he needs to be!

[Darien] 6:16AM
-I’m 6’1″ but I’d be able to see you.
-Even in a crowd, I’d know.

Elle 6:17AM
-Know what?

[Darien] 6:18AM
-That I’d want to dance with you

The biggest thing that annoyed me was basically the “bad guys” didn’t really get what was coming to them. They frustrated the living day lights out of me (I hate bullies) and bah, I don’t think they actually learned anything.

But I did love Sage as the fairy godmother and her Magic Pumpkin food truck carriage.

Overall, Geekerella with its fandom and geek-love was a delightful read. A bit corny but hella fun.

Look to the stars. Aim. Ignite.

QUOTES:

Electrolyte water tastes as bland as my soul feels.

First I find out I have a bodyguard named Lonny, than the hottest girl in Hollywood tells me we’re dating for the next twenty-three days, and now I’m about to die. Probably.
Is it too late to cash in my insured abs?

She reaches out to take the jacket. I hesitate for a moment, like Frodo with his Ring, but then I remember how much crap Frodo walked into and I’d rather not end up like Frodo. So I give it to Sage.

About Ashley Poston

ASHLEY POSTON loves coffee, moving castles, and starry night skies. A graduate from the University of South Carolina, she earned a degree in English and became a scholar in procrastination. When not in search of her next great adventure, she lives with her bossy cat in rural South Carolina. They are both firm believers that cosmic princesses can be space pirates, too.

Sometimes, you can catch her lurking around in coffee shops where she reads copious amounts of fanfiction and plays a lot of video games. Oh, and she writes nerdy books for young adults

  1. I’ll definitely be picking this up with the library at some point! I don’t think this will be a “keeper” for me, but I do want to see what all the hype is about and read something really feel-good and has lots of positive messages and geekiness. 🙂 Sorry this didn’t fully satisfy you. Thanks for your honesty! (I hate when the bad guys don’t get what’s coming to them!)

  8. I really enjoyed this one. I agree that it was a little bit corny at times, but I think I was really in the mood for that type of read at the time. I think right before reading this one I read a really angsty book so I needed something fun and light. lol! Great review!

  10. What a relief to hear that I’m not the only one who gets annoyed when the villains don’t get their comeuppance…especially in a contemporary story. It’s just too lifelike, haha. Still though, this Elle and Darien sound very cute!
