Really Really Short Reviews: Legend by Marie Lu

Really Really Short Reviews

Welcome to Really Really Short Reviews were the name is long and the reviews are short! Because sometimes short is that much sweeter. (Also, because I’m really lazy!) And there might be quotes too (lots and lots)! (Because everyone loves quotes, right?)

What was once the western United States is now home to the Republic, a nation perpetually at war with its neighbors. Born into an elite family in one of the Republic’s wealthiest districts, fifteen-year-old June is a prodigy being groomed for success in the Republic’s highest military circles. Born into the slums, fifteen-year-old Day is the country’s most wanted criminal. But his motives may not be as malicious as they seem.

From very different worlds, June and Day have no reason to cross paths – until the day June’s brother, Metias, is murdered and Day becomes the prime suspect. Caught in the ultimate game of cat and mouse, Day is in a race for his family’s survival, while June seeks to avenge Metias’s death. But in a shocking turn of events, the two uncover the truth of what has really brought them together, and the sinister lengths their country will go to keep its secrets.

“My mother thinks I’m dead. Obviously I’m not dead, but it’s safer for her to think so”

Did you know that this book is inspired by the relationship of  Jean Valjean and Javert of Les Misérables!?1!?!?!?

Les Mes - Valjean Les Mes - Javert

But post-apocalyptic/dystopian style and with a little more romance (there wasn’t much love between Valjeana and Javert unfortunately – but there is some kissy-face time with June and Day, mauahaha).

+ I loved the wonderful sibling relationships.

+ When siblings die in books it makes me really really sad ):

+ Good rivalry is good!

+ Love that June is pretty feisty and that  Day is kinda of Casanova (in a hilarious way b/c really, the boy is like what 16 years old?)

+Surprisingly not a super corny ‘fall for the enemy’ romance.

+ Good plot and twists all around!

+ So many awesome quotes from the book, but also many spoilers…(fyi – the ones below are not so spoiler-ish)

“I don’t know if anyone’s ever told you this”, he begins. He doesn’t blush, and his eyes don’t dart away. Instead I find myself staring into a pair of oceans – one perfect, the other blemished by that tiny ripple. “You’re very attractive.”

I’ve been complimented on my appearance before. But never in his tone of voice. Of all the things he’s said, I don’t know why this catches me off guard. But it startles me so much that without thinking I blurt out, “I could say the same about you.” I pause. “In case you didn’t know.”

A slow grin spreads across his face. “Oh, trust me. I know.”

“You’re brilliant,”he says.”But you’re a fool to stay with someone like me.”

I close my eyes at the touch of his hand.”Then we are both fools.”

“Forever and ever, kid, until you’re sick and tired of seeing me.”

  1. Yay, I’m so glad you absolutely LOVED this series, I was pleased to hear it was based off Les Mis as well! The series ends on one of the most wonderful, memorable endings ever. I really enjoy June and Day and hope you continue the series.

    1. the Les Mis reference is why I finally picked it up, haha. Definitely can’t wait to finish the rest of the series!

  2. See, this is a book I feel like I need to give another chance. I first ‘read’ it on audio and I hated it BUT I think that has something to do with the narrator for June. God, her voice was just the most annoying thing in the world LOL. I have a feeling if I read it in paperback, I’d probably really enjoy it, but I’m so hesitant!

    1. Bad narration can definitely kill the book ):
Maybe try skimming through it again? Hopefully it’ll be better the second time around 😉

  3. Would you believe I have this book on my Nook or kindle. addict confession. I have enough books to keep me reading for years, but that is another story. Jean Valjean and Javert of Les Misérables..i did not know that little tid-bit so thank you! Love your review 🙂

    1. Haha, I have a lot of books like that.

Your welcome – I was surprised, but it definitely gave me the extra incentive to read it 😉 Thanks!

  4. So glad you ended up enjoying this, Cyn! Legend’s one of my favorite YA series. Champion was fantastic, so I hope you enjoy it! <3

  5. I LOVED that series! I want to read her next book, The Young Elites.

    1. I still need to finish this series, but I picked up her new book already, haha. Hopefully I’ll get to it soon, haha. Hope you enjoy The Young Elite!
