Review: Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness

Publisher: Viking Adult (January 1, 2011)
Hardcover:  592 pages
Rating: of 5 stars

Deep in the stacks of Oxford’s Bodleian Library, young scholar Diana Bishop unwittingly calls up a bewitched alchemical manuscript in the course of her research. Descended from an old and distinguished line of witches, Diana wants nothing to do with sorcery; so after a furtive glance and a few notes, she banishes the book to the stacks. But her discovery sets a fantastical underworld stirring, and a horde of daemons, witches, and vampires soon descends upon the library. Diana has stumbled upon a coveted treasure lost for centuries-and she is the only creature who can break its spell.

Deborah Harkness’ Discovery of Witches is the first book of the All Souls Trilogy. The second book of the trilogy Shadow Of Night just came out this month!! So, go buy both books RIGHT NOW and support Deborah Harkness!

Discovery of Witches is currently my favorite book right now after having read it a couple months back. Discovery of Witches or DoW (as my friends and I refer to it) is simply a great read. It is a story combining action, the supernatural, and a whirlwind romance all of which occur in modern Europe. This perfect combination pulls you in within the first few pages and doesn’t allow you to put the book down until you have finished the book. I know that sounds cheesy but, its the truth, the story draws you into the world that Harkness has created and leaves you, by the end of the book feeling as if you were really in the main characters world.

There are so many reasons why I really enjoyed this book. One of those reasons being that the combination I mentioned above really does keep you wanting to read more. The amount of action that fills the book is so gripping. The way that Harkness has combined the supernatural aspect of the characters and crafted it into thier unique love story is just beautiful. Another major reason I adore this book is the world in which Harkness has created for the reader. This world appearing in our minds as the world we already know but, with an elegance that allows us to believe that witches, vampires, and demons could easily be apart of our real world. Overall, Discovery of Witches is an incredible first book that will leave you wanting more and eager to go out and buy Harkness’ second book in the series, Shadow of Night.

I would definately recommend this book to any adult who likes a mixture of romance, the supernatural, and a lot of action!

Kim and I will be attending a local book signing next week for Shadow of Night, so look out for that upcoming post!!

😀  Enjoy the little things!
