Captain Garret Reed of the Nighthawk guard has a deadly mission: capture a steel-jawed monster preying on women. He hates to put his partner, Perry, in jeopardy, but she’s the best bait he has. Little does he realize, he’s about to be caught in his own trap.

Perry has been half in love with Garrett for years, but this is not exactly the best time to start a relationship—especially when their investigation leads them directly into the clutches of the madman she thought she’d escaped…

Another lovely collection from the London Steampunk series! As with all of Bec McMaster’s novels, it’s punched full of romance and action. This story features Garrett and Perry (who we were introduced to early in the series).

The Action:

There’s always been sort of a big overlaying arc story to the London Steampunk series, but this one sort of sag-ways off and has to deal more with Perry’s past and Garrett’s secrets (rather than the issues concerning the blue bloods etc.). I really enjoyed Perry’s story. It had this Jack the Ripper feel and I loved the last quarter of the book. It was intriguing and intense and kept me on the edge of my seat. Perry was a really strong character, but she also had a softer side, too (she liked to read to romance novels, too!). It was nice to see Garrett prove that he was capable of letting her do her own thing when she need to, but can be there to help her shoulder the burden. Garrett is a very easily loved hero. He has all the trappings of an alpha male, but also not shy to admit (eventually) that Perry really has a hold of his heart.

Garrett plucked a half-open book from the small armchair in the corner and glanced at the title. “A gothic?”

Perry uncurled herself swiftly and reached for it, but he held it high, flicking it open to where it had rested, “-and then he tasted the breath of her, each lingering caress-”

“Give it back,” she growled.

The Romance:

It’s a friends to lover romance!! I love those. I’ve been so excited for this story since the last book (My Lady Quicksilver) and the big tease about the possible romance. Garrett and Perry have been partners for ages, and Perry’s always had some feeling for him. But Perry hide’s behind a “boyish” disguise, and Garrett never really saw her as a girl…that is until that faithful night where Perry blew Garrett’s mind and wore a dress. Garrett suddenly starts to see Perry in a different light, and has to deal with these feelings he has for her. And well, I love nothing more than seeing the hero get knocked down a peg or two by love.

It’s interesting dynamic between the two. They’ve always had good rapport but now there’s this sexual tension that underlies their interaction. That being said, I like that their relationship isn’t just built on lust, but an actual friendship that leads to something more.

One hand curled around her waist, drawing her in tight against him. Perry slid her gloved hand over his, holding it in place, her breath trembling through her chest. “You shouldn’t be here. You’re going to ruin everything.”

Overall, Forged by Desire was a fun and engaging read. It was able to really focus more on the (change of) relationship between Perry and Garrett, all while set it in a murder mystery backdrop. Definitely worth picking up if you’ve enjoyed the other books in the series, or even if you just like good ol’ steampunk paranormal romance with a healthy dose of action.
