Once she spurned the man…
When the Duke of Lennox hires Sir Brook Derring, England’s best investigator, to find his daughter, Brook intends only to rescue the lady and return to his solitary life. He deals with London’s roughest criminals every day of the week; surely he should be able to endure seeing his first love again—the perfect girl who broke his heart…

Now her life depends on him
Lady Lillian-Anne Lennox has always done her best to live up to her father’s standards of perfection—at the cost of following her heart. When she’s kidnapped and her perfect life is shattered, Lila has another chance. Together, Lila and Brook navigate not only the dark and deadly side of London, but the chasm of pride and prejudice that divides them.

Definitely a nice addition to the series, we’ve been getting peeks of the enigmatic investigator, Sir Brook Derring for the last few books, and it’s pretty obvious he can’t help but play the hero, especially to Lady Lila, even though he’s determine not to like her anymore. Once upon a time, Brook would have done anything to win the heart of Lila, but after breaking his heart, Lila is the last person Brook wants to be around. Too bad fates got other plans for the two of them.

It was an interesting second chance romance between Brook and Lila. I was a bit surprised by Brook’s game of teaching Lila about unrequited love, making her fall in love with him and than leaving her. It seemed very unhero-like. Brook is reluctantly helping Lila after an attempted kidnapping and his head knows all the reasons why he shouldn’t fall in love again. But his heart is definitely telling him difference things, muahaha. Being forced together, I liked how their relationship developed. I liked that Lila ended up surprising Brook. Lila is definitely flawed but I liked that she was able to mature and become more self-aware.

That adorably shocked expression. He didn’t want to find her adorable. He didn’t want to enjoy shocking her, but he couldn’t seem to help it.

With the romance, there’s some suspense as Brook tries to hunt down Lila’s kidnapper. Being forced to be Lila’s bodyguard, it sets up the perfect setting for some great relationship building between them. It also sets up for some action-packed scenes as Brook goes after the bad guys. Overall, it was enjoyable romance with some good suspense. If you’re a fan of Shana Galen and the Covent Garden Cubs series, it’s definitely worth checking out.
