Allison Beckstrom’s magic has taken its toll on her, physically marking her and erasing her memories-including those of the man she supposedly loves. But lost memories aren’t the only things preying on Allie’s thoughts.

Her late father, the prominent businessman-and sorcerer-Daniel Beckstrom, has somehow channeled himself into her very mind. With the help of The Authority, a secret organization of magic users, she hopes to gain better control over her own abilities-and find a way to deal with her father…

Review:

Wow. I don’t know how many of y’all saw my review of Allie Beckstrom book one, Magic in the Blood, but I basically thought of it as an okay start to what I assumed would be a decent but not spectacular series. I was wrong, so wrong.

Magic in the Shadow is book three in the series, and we finally see Zayvion taking Allie out on a real date, Allie’s dead father takes up residence in her head (which honestly is just as weird as it sounds), and Allie happens to adopt a stray Gargoyle who she named Stone. Yup, that’s right. She has a pet gargoyle.

It’s like the first two books were setting up… everything. This series has become hard to put down. Allie is constantly developing into this kickass, vulnerable heroine who won’t take BS from anyone. It’s hard to resist her charms. All the moments between her and Zayvion keep getting sweeter and sweeter. There’s of course the imminent danger that Allie can’t seem to help but get caught up in interfering with her everyday life and growing relationship with Zayvion. But that doesn’t stop Allie from trying to do it all.

Zayvion is still as much a mystery as he was in the first book. Sure, Allie and the reader learn more about him this book than before. But, all that information revealed does is make for more questions. It seems like, for now at least, Zayvion and mysteries will go hand in hand.

The fast-paced story makes it easy to jump in, and only emerge to find you’ve basically read the whole series. There’s a beautiful balance of the paranormal, suspense, and romance to appeal to any urban fantasy fan.
