Review: Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi

Unravel Me by Tahereh MafiPublisher: HarperCollins (February 5, 2013)
Hardcover: 480 pages
Rating: of 5 stars

Juliette has escaped to Omega Point. It is a place for people like her—people with gifts—and it is also the headquarters of the rebel resistance.

She’s finally free from The Reestablishment, free from their plan to use her as a weapon, and free to love Adam. But Juliette will never be free from her lethal touch.

Or from Warner, who wants Juliette more than she ever thought possible.

Wow. Ms. Mafi  has outdone herself. Like with Shatter Me, this wasn’t a book I could easily put down. Her prose just draws me in and holds me captive as I drown under the exquisite beauty of it all, but still loving every moment of my torture.

And parts of this book was torturous. Specifically the parts that involved Juliette. Awkward considering she’s the protagonist. She’s indulging in a lot of woe-is-me-ness this book that’ll leave the readers a bit irritated. Where’d that empowered Juliette from the end of Shatter Me go? And Adam isn’t nearly as awesome as I remembered.

The stars of this book are Kenji and Warner. Gasp. I know. Warner! Unlike many of the other Shatter Me fans, I didn’t read Destroy Me until after this book, so I wasn’t too sure about this hype with Warner. Since Warner, for me, had been vaguely deranged, possibly in “love” with Juliette, and gorgeous. This book doesn’t dispute any of that. But it did flesh him out as a character more. His demented, obsessive, absolute love for Juliette was enchanting and impossible to look away from.

Then there’s Kenji, who’s more than just this rowdy fun guy. He’s responsible and serious. And he doesn’t take any of the BS Juliette is putting out. He tells it straight, and makes the reader love him all the more for it.

This book was worth the read. And the reread. And the subsequent reread of the whole series. If you haven’t already picked up Shatter Me and know the beauty of this series, do it now. (Check out my review for Shatter Me if you’re still unsure.) This is for any fans of dystopians, action and paranormal romances.
