Romantic Thursday: My Lady Quicksilver by Bec McMaster

Romantic Thursday
It’s Romantic Thursday with Bookmunchie! So why is Thursday romantic? Because I like Thursday and I like romance! Basically, I just love romance, in YA books, in adult, contemporary, historical, whichever the genre and sometimes I’m too lazy to write full reviews but I do love sharing fun quotes or just gushing about characters. So that’s what Romantic Thursday is for! To share my love. May it be through actual full reviews, quick reviews, or just fun quotes.

Determined to destroy the Echelon she despises, Rosalind Fairchild is on seemingly easy mission. Get in. Uncover the secrets of her brother’s disappearance. And get out.

In order to infiltrate the Nighthawks and find their leader, Sir Jasper Lynch, Rosalind will pose as their secretary. But she doesn’t count on Lynch being such a dangerously charismatic man, challenging her at every turn, forcing her to re-evaluate everything she knows about the enemy.

He could be her most dangerous nemesis—or the ally she never dreamed existed.

This one really brought it. My Lady Quicksilver starts off where Heart of Iron left off. Rosalind, aka Mercury, leader of the humanist group, desperate  to find her brother, secures herself a position as secretary to Sir Jasper Lynch, masquerading as Rosa Marberry. Jasper Lynch is a rogue blueblood and the guild leader of the Nighthawks instructed to find and capture Mercury or forfeit his own life if he fails.

The story is pretty intriguing all around. There are lots of good action and drama, with a nice pace. It builds on the political unrest that stems from the the first two books in the series, as a new threat creates chaos for the Echelon and bluebloods.

The romance was stellar.

“He wasn’t as I expected him to be. He’s…nothing like I expected.”

Ah, the improbable romance between enemies. The fact is, Rosalind and Jasper sizzle when they’re together. Even when they should have been enemies. Even when Jasper didn’t know Mercury and Rosa are one and the same. There was good ol’ sexual tension and hot chemisty. The best part of this romance for me however, is watching them truly, deeply, madly, fall in love. I really, really liked watching Lynch and Rosalind slowly fall for each other. Jasper is intrigued and attracted to Mercury even when he knows he shouldn’t be. With Rosa, it’s a different type attraction that’s built on more than just lust.

“Mercury was a mystery designed to be solved. A challenge. Sex. And Rosa? His stomach clenched. He wasn’t quite sure what she meant to him. Her slightly bawdy humor intrigued him and he found himself seeking her out increasingly. The shocking truth was he liked spending time with her.”

Jasper is so much more than what you expect and it’s easy to see why Rosalind falls for him, despite her hardest to hate him.

“Lynch might be attracted to Mercury against his will, but the truth was a delicious irony, for she too had been caught in the trap.”

I love the slightly irrational jealousy from Rosalind when Jasper tells Mercury (aka. Rosalind) that there’s someone he truly cares for and doesn’t want to do anything to hurt her (aka. Rosa, aka. still Rosalind). In the end, for Jasper it was always Rosalind.

Overall, a great addition to the London Steampunk series. It was a fun, and suspenseful read with a sweet romance.
