[Azriel is such a flirt, but he’s also so totally awesome & does what needs to get done]
“I c-can’t let you give us your cloak,” she protested. “You’ll freeze to death!”
“If you’re sincerely worried, perhaps I could slip in there next to you,” he suggested as Rachel stifled a giggle. “As you, yourself, have noted in the past, Persephone, I am rather hot, and I’m quite sure that our combined body heat would–”
“On second thought, it is exceedingly unlikely that you’ll freeze to death without y-your cloak,” interrupted Persephone, who was feeling warmer already. “But I thank you for your generous offer.”
“You are more welcome,” murmured Azriel as he reached down to brush a lock of hair off her cheek. Without meaning to, Persephone smiled at the touch of his hand.
[Wolf! Definitely the strong silent type. He’s just so sweet.]
“The smile she’d been waiting for warmed his face, a glint of white teeth flashing. “I’m not sure. I’ve never had to fight a bear before.” He cocked his head toward the east. “There’s a lake that way, maybe a hundred yards. We should refill the water”.
Wolf paused, glanced at her.
Scarlet’s brow was creased as she inched towards him. “Do that again.”
He took half a step back, eyes glinting with sudden nerves. “Do what?”
“We met less than a week ago and in that time I’ve done nothing but lie and cheat and betray you. I know. But if you give me a chance…all I want is to protect you. To be near you. For as long as I’m able.”
[I love Beast! He’s just sooo happy-go-lucky and positive.]
“I work in blessed silence for a while, marveling that a man so ugly can have such a charming grin”
He lets out a sigh, “Sweet camulos! It’s about time.”
I cannot help it. I laugh. “What do you mean?”
“I have loved you since you first slapped that vile mud on my leg and ordered me to heal.”
“As far back as that?”
“I was too stupid to know it, but yes.”
[Oh Max. He’s the straitlaced Duke, but when’s a bit tipsy, he’s hilarious. Also, it’s fun watching become a little less stuck up and fall in love.]
But every duke she’d seen depicted in the papers or in satirical prints was gary-haired and stooped.
This duke was neither. Tall and broad-shouldered, he was them most striking man she’d ever seen. Not handsome, no. His features were too bold for that – his jaw too sharply chiseled, his eyes too deeply set – and his golden brown hair was a touch too straight to be fashionable. But attractive,oh yes. It annoyed her that she noticed just how attractive.
“You’re so pretty,” he murmured as she struggled with his boots. He ran his hand over her curls, tangling his fingers in them. “You’re hair is like… it’s like… I dunno. Something black and shiny.”
She smothered a smile. Apparently when the duke was jug-bitten, he became somewhat inarticulate. “Like beetles, perhaps?” she joked. “They’re black and shiny.”
“Right, beetles.” He blinked, then scowled. “Not beetles. Don’t be daft.” He’d filled both his hands with her hair and was smoothing it and caressing it. “Something prettier.”
[He’s such a cutie!]
“I’m rewarded with a smile that takes away all the hard arrogant edges on his face, leaving him very attractive. He should definitely make that a permanent fixture.”
“Hi,” he says
“For the fact that you are such a big flirt.”
He laughs. “You’re the one in my lap. I was just sitting here minding my own business.”
“Just the plane, then?”
I try to stand up, but he pulls me back down again. “Man, the plane is really bumpy today,” he says .
[Gideon is the best historical hero eveeeeeeeer. He’s absolutely hilarious and adorable and just plain fantastic.]
“What if I shave?” he said. “I look much better when I’m shaved. My cousin will vouch for that—do I not look almost handsome when I shave, Edward? ” He didn’t wait for the duke’s reply but turned earnestly back to Prudence. “Do you think you could marry me if I shaved?”
“I would appreciate it if you would stop… stop… ogling me like that,” she hissed, tugging her very modest neckline higher. “It is very embarrassing.” She folded her arms across her breasts defensively. He tried to look contrite. “It wasn’t me,” he confessed. “It was my eyes. They are bold and easily led and have no sense of propriety.”
[Aww Finn! Finn is definitely amazing. You just want to hug him.]
“Let me look at you.” I pull away and put my hands on his cheeks, examining his face. Blue eyes, of course. And how could I forget that mouth? Thin pink lips with one crooked corner always suggesting a mocking smile. My God, how had I never noticed before how handsome he is? “You need a haircut.”
He rubs the side of his thumb over my cheekbone. “You’re beautiful.”
“My body still feels hollow and unsubstantial, as though I accidentally left some it four years in the future. “I don’t know. Will you be able to catch me if I fall?”
“Doubt it,” he says, “but I’ll let you land on top of me. I’ll make a nice squooshy landing.”
I smile. “My hero.”
[Talk about perfect cowboy. There’s not resist this guy.]
“I bit my cheek and tried not to smile. It didn’t matter what I threw at the guy; I couldn’t shake that darn sunny attitude of his. Worse of all, I was afraid it might be contagious. “Just so I’m prepared… are all cowboys like you?” I asked, stepping up into Old Bessie.
Jessie stepped between the door and me before I could close it. His body took up almost the entire door frame. “There’s no other cowboy like me,” he said with a smile.”
[If I’m ever lost anywhere, he’s the guy I want with me. Heck, he just stay with me even when I’m not lost.]
He grins at me., making my stomach flutter. No one in my old life would be permitted to grin me like that. […] I can’t help but smile back at him. He leans up and kisses me, a brief, thing before he starts to pull away again. He pauses, eye half closed, thoughtful, before leaning up once more, taking his time, his mouth warm against mine. By the time he pulls away, my heart is pounding.
“Major, to what extent did you act upon your feelings for Miss LaRoux?”
“How am I supposed to answer that question?”
[Jack was so broken ): But he’s also sooo fantastic. He definitely knows how to make a girl swoon.]
He’s been her enemy, teased and taunted her, made her blind with rage. And he kissed her as if she were the only thing in existence. As if she were his existence. And it was perfect.
The look in his eyes was pained. “I want you.” His lips shaped the words against her. “But I need you more.”
