Top Ten of 2016: Best Reads I’ve Read in 2016

It’s that time of year again! Thanks to Rachel @ Fiktshun, Jaime @ Two Chicks on Books, Nancy @ Tales of a Ravenous Reader & Bridget @ Dark Faerie Tales for hosting the TOP TEN OF 2016!

So today’s topic is 10 Best Books I’ve Read in 2016 (Doesn’t have to be released in 2016, just a book you’ve read in 2016). I’m super terrible at actually ranking my top ten, so here’s favourite in order of then I read them:

(01) A Gathering of Shadows by V.E Schwab [my review]: This was a magical read! Kell and Lila seriously made me very happy and I loved the all the secondary characters so much! I loved all the spectacularness of this sequel and I can’t wait got book 3!

(02) Girl Against the Universe by Paula Stokes [my review]: What a great story about a girl who struggles with PTSD and a coming of age story. Heartwarming, realistic and optimistic in all the best ways.

(03) My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, & Jody Meadows [my review]: This one caught me by surprise, I wasn’t expecting to love it as much as I did. It’s  such a fun, silly, and enjoyable read! I loved this wacky re-telling of Lady Jane Grey.

(04) If I Only Had a Duke by Lenora Bell [my review]: Such a cute, shenanigan-y HR romance! It’s got letters, and road trips and silliness and an adorable unexpected couple! This book definitely needs more love! Go forth and read it!

(05) The Hating Game by Sally Thorne: The epitome of the hate-to-love romance trope. There’s just something about these pair of weirdos that I love some much. This was a perfect slow-burning office romance! I still need to write an actual review; unsure how to express my love for it.

(06) Saga (Vol 1 – 3) by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples [my review]: So weird. So sci-fi. So epic. This graphic novel seriously blew me away. Just so much love for it.

(07) Promise of Fire (and Breath of Fire) by Amanda Bouchet [my review]:What a fabulous action-packed fantasy romance! This series is totally worth jumping on the bandwagon for! There’s the tension-filled romance! And the hilariously slightly awkward heroine. And the overly-confident swoony hero. And the fabulous entourage! And the magic! What more could you need?

(08) Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo [my review]: This book. I don’t even know. My poor heart. It was brilliant in so many ways. The characters are amazing. The story is engaging. The snark is on full force. It made me grin and giggle, gasp and cry. It really brought all the feels, so many feels.

(09) Gemina by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff [my review]: Companion book to Illumiae, it was an amazing space action adventure read. It was a bit of emotional roller-coaster (in a good way), that usually had me going “Whaaaat?!?!? Noooo waaay” a lot of time. Such fun.

(10) The Forbidden Wish by Jessica Khoury: I was pretty wary going into this book, I’ve been burned before by an Aladdin retelling before. But this was lovely and so satisfying. The romance was done so well and I loved the voice of the jinn. Also, awesome girl power in this book.

  1. The Hating Game <3 LOVE that book!! I need to get to Gemina (right after I finish Illuminae which is awesome so far) and Girl Against the Universe. Great list!!

  2. Ohhhhh, Gemina! I NEED to read this! Great list! 🙂 I have Illuminae on my list, because I was slow to start. If you have time, my list is here:

  3. I love your choices! Almost all of your list’s books I’ve read them too! 🙂

  4. Great choices. I have heard so many great things about my lady Jane. I really need to read Gemima.

  5. The Forbidden Wish was great! 😀

  6. ADSOM and The Promise of Fire are definitely two of my favorites! The Forbidden List is on my TBR list as and, of course, Gemina. I hope you many more fabulous ones in 2017 🙂

  7. Oh I am so glad that you like Promise of Fire as well—-such a fabulous book. I really can’t wait to read Lenora’s Bell’s book, I just read the first book and was amazed. Definitely a fan of this new debut author. Marrying Winterborne was one of my favorites for this year as well, the hero was one of the best. Hope 2017 is just as great for you.

  8. Ooo, AGOS! I liked that book a lot, though I think I liked ADSOM more. I have A Promise of Fire (and probably Breath of Fire) saved for my adult Top Ten list, coming on Wednesday. Today’s was YA only (for me). 😀 I definitely need to read The Hating Game. Fantastic list, Cyn! =)

Alyssa @ The Eater of Books!

  9. I had the same reactions reading Gemina. Add in the chills that I got, and it was an excellent read. I also loved A Promise of Fire. I can’t wait to dive into the sequel. Amazing list!

  10. EEP! I still need to read The Forbidden Wish but I’m so glad it made your list to remind me about it. And I’ve added If I Only Had.. so maybe I could give it some more love when I start reading more historicals. Woot on A Gathering of Shadows!! I just saw that somewhere else and I have to read it like, NOW, b/c book 3 is coming!!! So many books you have on here that are so good!! Great list, girl!

  11. You know, I actually haven’t read a single book on this list. NOT A SINGLE ONE. Where was I all through 2016? Either way, I not have a very good reading list for next year, and hopefully I can get to a few of these! (Many of them were already on my TBR anyway) 😀

    My recent post:

  12. I haven’t read any of these yet, Cyn, but some are on my shelf – like Gemina and A Promise of Fire 🙂
    Great list!!

  13. I haven’t yet put my list of favorites together, but it doesn’t mean I can’t peek at other people’s lists. 🙂 It’s no surprise I haven’t yet read any on your list–but notice the “yet”? Several are on my to read list–so there’s hope still. A Promise of Fire is high up there along with Schwab’s series. Crooked Kingdom is also on my to read list (but I still have to read the first book).

So many good books . . . Thank you for sharing!

  14. So much yes to The Hating Game! I love that book so much. I seriously need to read A Gathering of Shadows.

  15. I really want to read Girl Against the Universe soon. It sounds like my kind of contemporary. I just added Saga to my wishlist because I keep seeing it everywhere! I really want to read The Hating Game too. Ahhh! I want to read all the books right now!

  16. Ohhhhhh best top 10 ever cos I see my two favourites Hahha. I loved Saga as well, still need to continue that series!
